Description

Conservation International discusses its collaboration with viscose company Sateri over the past year using the Freshwater Health Index to conduct a basin-scale assessment in Poyang Lake basin (China), and to help define and measure the direct linkages between corporate water stewardship commitments and freshwater basin health.

Derek Vollmer and Yiqing Zhang from Conservation International provide a brief overview of the Freshwater Health Index tool and discuss how a basin-scale health assessment in the Poyang Lake, China, has helped define and measure the direct linkages between corporate water stewardship commitments and freshwater basin health. They will highlight the value of a common framework that engages a diverse group of stakeholders and provides a shared vocabulary for discussing the various ecological, ecosystem service and governance indicators that contribute to a holistic understanding of basin health. The joint project also provides a local foundation towards Sateri’s broader “2030 vision,” which includes contributing to a net positive state of nature through protection, restoration and regeneration of the land and freshwater ecosystems across their value chain footprint. Participants will better understand how the FHI might contribute to collective action and to implementation of the AWS Standard, especially Steps 1 (Gather and Understand) and 4 (Evaluate).

Facilitated by Sarah Hauck of Conservation International, the session consists of a joint presentation followed by Q&A.
